- identify elements of poetic forms/intent in musical lyrics, printed materials, commercials, and rap songs
- connect written poetic structures to vocal performance styles, define the goals and uses of poetry slams and identify examples of poetry slam material
- identify and use poetic conventions of rhyme, rhythm, refrain, alliteration, assonance, onomatopoeia, metaphors, similes, and personification
- learn how to publish creative work across different avenues such as established journals, nontraditional media, self-publishing, community-based outlets and electronically online
- create a website to showcase student's original poetry
- witness how poetry has been, and continues to be, a medium for positive social change
- record visual/audio of a spoken word piece
